Church of St. Nerses the Great

The Church of St. Nerses the Great is a modern religious building in Khojavend District that follows traditional Armenian architectural design with stone construction and characteristic cross forms. The structure rises as a place of worship that draws from centuries-old building styles adapted for contemporary use.

The church was completed in the early 2000s as part of efforts to strengthen Armenian religious life in the region. Its construction reflected a period of renewed church building across the Nagorno-Karabakh area during that time.

The church is located in Khojavend District in what was formerly called Martuni and now goes by other local names. Currently the building is not accessible to visitors due to changes in regional conditions since 2023.

The building is one of the newest Armenian religious structures in this part of Azerbaijan, built well into the 21st century rather than in older centuries like most traditional churches. This makes it a different kind of religious monument, showing how Armenian faith communities continued to invest in new sacred spaces even in modern times.
