Pabellón Kerta Gosa

The Kertha Gosa Pavilion is a covered structure that is part of the larger Klungkung Palace complex in Semarapura, defined by its completely painted ceilings. These surfaces showcase detailed scenes from Hindu epics and religious stories across the entire overhead space.

The pavilion was constructed in 1686 by I Dewa Agung Jambe as the judicial center of Klungkung Kingdom, where legal disputes were resolved. It continued to function as a working court even after colonial authorities took control of the region.

The ceiling showcases the distinctive Kamasan painting style, where each color and character embodies meanings from Hindu and Balinese beliefs. These visual narratives were designed to communicate values and teachings to people gathering in the pavilion.

The pavilion is accessible during daylight hours, and you can appreciate the painted surfaces by walking around to view them from different positions. Early morning visits offer better lighting conditions for studying the detailed artwork and fewer visitors.

During court sessions, elaborately decorated chairs were arranged with each displaying a specific animal symbol that revealed the rank of the person seated. Lions marked the king's position, cattle indicated where priests sat, and dragons identified the administrative officials' workspace.
